Checking Out Megatokyo
By Noobity

Dear friends, I have never been the most awesome of webcomic readers. In fact I'm down right lazy, but I've decided to force upon you some of my more recent catches in the webcomic world.

First up is Megatokyo. I know, I know, it only took me like what, 900 comics to check it out? Man I'm on the ball I tells ya. But anyway, for those of you who haven't read any of MT, you're in for a treat. A manga/doujinshi webcomic by Fred Gallagher, Megatokyo is dramastastical. In Tokyo, where every stereotypically insane japanese thing happens, friends Piro and Largo become trapped in Japan after spending all their money on Japanese stuff and B33r. After a while the comic switches gears and everything from Largo's video game like grasp on reality to Piro's girl woes take lead focus at any time (often intertwining, sometimes completely seperate from each other and on the same page, which is honestly one of the greatest things I've ever seen a comic of any kind do).

Not to be overshadowed, Gallagher's art is nothing short of extraordinary. Using a very anime style, it is very easy to believe you're reading something off the shelves from TokyoPop or any number of convention floors. With a handful of printed works on the market, you probably can pick up the comic off the shelves, as a matter of fact. The books I've been in contact with have been remarkably polished, and it's hard to believe that the entire thing is set up by a two person team from creation to shipping.

Aside from the comic itself, the site and it's affiliate online store are remarkably easy to navigate. One click will usually get you to where you'd like to be, which is something many of the flashgasm or more confusing sites around the net cannot boast. I've not personally purchased from MegaGear, the MegaTokyo store, but I can say that I very much plan to. The merchandise is exciteable, in fact. Things from the Boo plushie to the books, art supplies and even eco-friendly hemp gear are all worth taking a look at for your friends and family for holidays, or even to splurge for yourself. It's a very well put together operation.

Finally I'm attracted to their eco-awareness. I don't agree with them, I'm personally down for wearing cotton and using whatever energy I can get my hands on, but their degree of dedication is remarkable and something I entirely respect. Helping with charities to get art supplies to school kids, and the aforementioned environmental conscience have made me believe very much that with the right attitude you can make a difference. I applaud their actions.

So go check the site out, read the comics, buy a shirt. You'll be glad you did, I promise.
