Upcoming Book The History of Webcomics Receives Strong Criticism By StacMaster-S Published: March 2, 2006
Print Email
There has been a lot of recent criticism over T. Campbell's soon to be released book The History of Webcomics. Scott Kurtz of PvP comments heavily (in his most recent rant) on the use of several different pieces of character art without getting the artists permission first. According to Campbell's blog, Scott is currently the only person who hasn't given permission for his art to be used. Scott also talks about how certain people seem to be absent from the book and how he feels a book about the history of webcomics should have been put together. Rodney Caston, who co-wrote Megatokyo in its early years, comments at his online blog at RCaston.com that the book fails in doing even the most basic reseach, and that parts of the book are "pure fantasy." Campbell himself has responded to some of these recent criticisms on his blog. In this post he does admit that creating a cover with unofficial art from several webcomic properties without permission was wrong, and in this post he gives his reasons for not interviewing Rodney (and others) for the book citing that over time he began to distrust the interview process as an accurate way of compiling an accurate view of webcomic history. I will be posting my own personal thoughts on this book in the forum. Discuss this article in the Forum!
